What is a directional speaker

Conventional loudspeakers are used to spread sound over a wide area: using the vibrations of a paper or plastic cone to spread the sound in a wide arc in the front.

A directional speaker is used to spread sound over a narrow area: it's a "sound flashlight" that "shines" sound energy to a precise location, producing a narrow beam of audible sound.

How directional speakers work

Piezoelectric transducers (grey circles) in a directional speaker generate two ultrasonic waves (red and blue) that, due to the directivity of the ultrasonic waves, travel in a narrow area like a flashlight beam, these waves are modulated as a propagate, but they can be simply imagined as two independent waves.

When the two waves encounter obstruction, they slow down and demodulate, producing a new wave (green) with a much lower frequency - equal to the difference in frequency between the two original waves, which is audible to the human ear scope.

People standing outside the beam cannot hear anything because the sound waves don't radiate from the source to reach their ears.
